PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Architectural design as a potent means of cultural expression is an essential economic, social, technological and communication tool in any sophisticated society. This conversation will explore the role architecture and design plays in contemporary culture. What are the factors that influence architectural design, as well as the means by which architecture helps shape attitudes and behavior? It is Larry’s mission to bring awareness to the importance of the physical environment and to encourage everyone to be activists in helping to shape the built world.

LARRY SPECK, FAIA

Professor (W.L. Moody Centennial Professorship in Architecture)

Lawrence Speck is an American architect and professor. He is a senior principal with Page Architects and a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the W. L. Moody Centennial Professorship in Architecture. He teaches two humanities courses that are open to students from very diverse disciplines—engineering, business, computer science, economics, film, music etc. who explore what it is to solve problems in a truly creative way. Larry has collaborated with teams across the country and Central Texas on both iconic and humble buildings and urban landscapes. Larry wrote and hosted the PBS documentary, "Building the American City: San Antonio", and is proud to have collaborated with impactful community institutions including The University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, and St. Philip’s College.

David M. Adelman is the Founder and Principal of AREA Real Estate, LLC. David oversees development and asset management for a portfolio of mixed-use, industrial and office properties. He is also involved with other investment ventures, including a variety of private equity investments. While having a strong emphasis on mixed-use housing, industrial properties and office buildings, his experience is broad-based, including land, traditional multi-family and retail deals.
A native of San Antonio, Mr. Adelman is known for his vast knowledge of the city and for his ability to close even the most complicated deals. Having purchased his first rental property while in high school, David officially began his real estate career in Austin, Texas in 1989 while attending The University of Texas and continues to be a devout Longhorn fan. He has been married to wife, Sharon, since 1995 and has two daughters, Katherine and Ally.
David is involved in numerous community-related Board and committees, including the newly formed ITC Centennial 1968. He is a founding member and Past-Chair of the local chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI San Antonio) and currently on the Board of Centro San Antonio. He has a strong interest in public education and formerly served as the Vice Chair of the Citizens Oversight Committee for the $515M SAISD Bond Program. Additionally, David has had significant involvement with KIPP San Antonio and served as Co-Chair of the Facilities Committee. He is a Past-President for Temple Beth-El Board of Trustees. He is also a member of the Investment Committee at Temple Beth-El, which stewards all of the endowments. Consistent with his strong views on environmental sustainability, David is a member of the local advisory board of The Nature Conservancy. Most recently, David has joined the Board of Trustees at University of the Incarnate Word and also serves on the Finance Committee.
