ULI/SA INSIDER’S TOUR: Weston Urban – Developing a District
Learn about Weston Urban’s vision for the development of downtown on this Insider’s Tour, exclusively for ULI San Antonio members & annual sponsors. Space is limited to the first 50 people who register.
Rosella at the Rand – Constructed in 1913 for the Wolff & Marx Co. department store, the Rand Building was heavily altered through the decades and even faced possible demolition in the 1980’s. Purchased by Weston Urban in 2013, the Rand has undergone extensive interior and exterior restoration and now houses major tech tenants such as Geekdom and Google Fiber. With the opening of Rosella at the Rand, this block of Houston Street will get a jolt of street activation. The interior design by Total Art Design and Architecture is intended to compliment the Rand’s historic character. The menu will include coffee, wine, beer, and food offerings.
The Milam – When the 21 story Milam Building was built in 1928, it was the nation’s tallest brick and reinforced-concrete structure and it was also the first high-rise air-conditioned office building in the country. Weston Urban purchased the Milam in 2016 and has plans to give the building a complete make-over into one of San Antonio’s most beautiful office towers.
The Savoy Building – Just across the street from the Rand Building, The Savoy Building is now home to the technology investment firm, Scaleworks, which acquires and operates business-to-business software companies. Led by Lew Moorman & Ed Byrne, Scaleworks will occupy the second and third floors of the property and the first floor is for retail with a small lobby for Scaleworks. The historic property, being renovated by Weston Urban, was once a hotel.
The Frost Tower – Frost Tower, designed by world famous architecture firm Pelli Clarke Pelli, will be the first high-rise to be built in downtown San Antonio since 1988. The product of a complicated P3 agreement, the 24-story office tower will provide A++ amenities including the coolest tenant lounge in town. Its glass curtain wall and distinct shape will introduce a new design aesthetic to the historic core. Ground level retail in the lobby and the parking garage on Houston Street will create a vibrant, commercial corridor that leads to the San Pedro Creek. Construction is underway and delivery is anticipated for the second quarter of 2019.
Pinch Boil House and Bia Bar – What started as a beloved pop-up has now morphed into a brick-and-mortar address at the Rand Building. Pinch Boil House and Bia Bar is the newest food and beverage establishment in the Houston Street Tech Corridor. The team at Pinch took a dingy space with outdated mirrored walls and checkerboard floor tiles and turned it into a bright and fun space, filled with family sized picnic tables. Serving Southeast Asian street food, a variety of seafood boils, and a curated selection of beers, Pinch brings new flavor to the neighborhood.
After 5 action-packed years at Rackspace, Randy teamed with Graham to form Weston Urban in 2012. As President, Randy is responsible for all aspects of the company’s investing and development. The former Vice President of Real Estate at Rackspace, Randy led the cloud computing company’s global portfolio from 2007 to 2011. During his tenure the company expanded to eight data centers in the U.S., Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. In that time the company’s worldwide office footprint grew to 1.5 million square feet. Smith also led the acquisition and transformation of the former Windsor Park Mall into “The Castle,” Rackspace’s LEED certified global headquarters located in Northeast San Antonio.
