Michael Guarino is the Mayoral appointment to San Antonio’s Historic and Design Review Commission. His other public service includes the Acting Directorship of the King William Association, San Antonio Museum of Art Visitor’s Committee for Art of the Ancient World, The University of Texas at Austin College of Fine Arts Advisory Council, Chairmanship of the Villa Finale Board of Directors, and Adjunct Professorship in the UTSA College of Architecture’s graduate program.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies with honors from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master’s of Architecture from the same institution where he subsequently taught. He was the first recipient of the Jessen Presidential Scholarship which took him to Oxford. After studies at the University of Siena he was the architect for the University of Texas excavations at Metaponto, Italy, and the Harvard Cornell Excavations at Sardis, Turkey, where he was employed by Harvard’s Fogg Museum of Art. His work as an archeological illustrator appears in publications of the British Museum, The University of Texas Press, and the University of Michigan Press.

He has been a designer at the Pritzker Prize winning Philadelphia firm of Venturi Scott Brown and is recently retired as Principal from San Antonio’s Ford, Powell & Carson Architects. In a design career spanning three decades his work has received 33 National, Local and Regional Awards.
