ULI LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON – Mixed-Use, Urban Concepts in Suburbia: Case Studies from other Texas Cities
Walkable urban cores of central cities have experienced a renaissance. Single-use, auto-oriented suburban business parks are no longer the favored place of work. This trend seems like a reversal of the 1980s, when suburban edge cities gained jobs and population while the central cities suffered. This luncheon will explore, through recent case studies, how the desire for a vibrant mix of uses in a walkable setting may be at the center of this paradigm shift to urbanization, and how it can be accomplished in the suburbs.
Come listen and learn about three award-winning large scale mixed-use developments in suburban settings from two of the best minds in the business: Jonathan Brinsden with Midway Development, who will present CityCentre in Houston and Steve VanAmburgh with KDC in Dallas, who will present Legacy West in Plano and CityLine in Richardson. These two Texas developers will show how creating a walkable, mixed-use “sub-urban” environment can make suburban communities more competitive in this changing marketplace.
Jonathan Brinsden serves as chief executive officer of Midway and guides the company’s overall business strategy and operations. Jonathan is a member of Midway’s leadership team and investment committee. Jonathan joined Midway’s development team in 2001, was named chief operating officer in 2008 and chief executive officer in 2013. Prior to joining Midway, Jonathan served as president and chief operating officer of Hamm Corporation, a Houston-based development company. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute Global Board of Directors, Board of Trustees and the Governance Committee, and past Chair of ULI Houston. He is also a board member of NAIOP and an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers. Jonathan is active in a number of civic leadership and charitable organizations including the board of Central Houston and Vice Chairman of Buffalo Bayou Partnership. Jonathan is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston Bauer Graduate Real Estate Program and serves on the Executive Advisory Board. Jonathan holds a Master of Science in Land and Real Estate Development, a Bachelor of Science in Construction Science and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design, all from Texas A&M.
Steve Van Amburgh manages KDC’s strategic planning, coordinates all new business development efforts and oversees all acquisition and development activities for the firm and its regional offices. Since assuming leadership of KDC in 2001, the firm has completed more than 133 corporate build-to-suit office and industrial projects valued in excess of $5 billion and totaling more than 30 million square feet. Over the last five years, KDC has developed 9 million square feet nationally, through its offices in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Charlotte. Notable clients include Toyota, State Farm Insurance, JPMorgan Chase, FedEx, Raytheon, Comcast, NBC Universal, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Liberty Mutual and Fluor Corporation.
Van Amburgh has led KDC through many years of growth and financial success, spanning varying industry trends and market conditions. Under his leadership, KDC has been named the NAIOP North Texas Developer of the Year five times and has been awarded numerous best real estate deals by the Dallas Business Journal and DCEO. In addition, Van Amburgh was named a Best Boss in the Business by Real Estate Forum in 2016. Van Amburgh earned a bachelor of science in economics and commerce at Washington and Lee University. He is celebrating his 27th year with KDC and its predecessor company, The Koll Company.
Don, a 29-year veteran of the commercial real estate industry, currently oversees the Property Management Team for Reata Real Estate, while maintaining an active level of involvement in Leasing, Tenant Representation, Sales, Acquisitions and Development.
A Co-Founder of REATA Real Estate, Don has held many leadership positions within the company while playing a key role in its many growth initiatives. As Principal at the Trammell Crow Company, Don jointly trained and oversaw the Retail Leasing and Brokerage Department and was recognized as the company’s top retail producer in consecutive years. He also partnered in the development of several landmark retail destinations in San Antonio including Alamo Quarry Market, Quarry Crossing, Quarry Village, The Village at Stone Oak and Sonterra Village.
Don holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from Texas Christian University.
